In February, I will be participating in FAWM (February Album Writing Month) found at fawm.org. I will write 14.5 songs in 29 days -- 1 point something song every 2 days... w00t!

reviews

"For a millisecond I'm stranded in the air off the precipice, Wile E. Coyote looking deep into the gorge below. Instead of plummeting I just float across the air. I feel funny about it, this isn't supposed to be happening, but, wow, here I am. That's a Naomi Hall song for me. They're dangerous in that I never know what to expect. They're glorious in that they pleasantly surprise me every time. I always fear I'll crash and burn but never do." - MungBeing Magazine

"Naomi's latest release is an effervescent euphony of trip-pop, from the local, Seattle area. Using a spartan method of interpretation to her sound, she eschews the more divergent branches of music, and comes out with an interpretation of what can be called, autonomy. Love Full of Punches is a twelve song set, two of which are bonus tracks. Their proclamation of love, and a sublime inspiration, for life's game, ranges from the sanguine, all the way up to pornographic, at times. A cunning headshot on the album's cover, reveals a chanteuse, steeped in her craft. This being the production of pacific type of vibe, known to herald positivity, she does her job well. I'd suggest trying this disc on for size. It's definitely something to surf with, if the internet is your wave of choice, and beyond that, great for tooling around in your car, or even at home." - Seattle Sinner

"Seattle-based Naomi Hall is an energetic hard-working singer/songwriter who composes electronic rock. Without a hint of irony, she pours her soul out into an opus dedicated to Ed Wood as well as her lead single "Until I Drown", which sounds stripped straight from a Sarah McLachlan b-side remixed by some club DJ. Fantastic harmonies, fiery beats, and piano/keyboard-centric pop all whirl about this enigmatic and friendly songstress." - Smother Magazine

"Naomi Hall's new CD Love Full of Punches is available now and, oh, is it a beautiful thing! Naomi's soaringly ascendent voice accompanies spacious instrumentation and a wit that has been described as 'quirky' but that I will call 'rapier'." - Mark Givens, Wckr Spgt

"Musically, Seattle-based Naomi Hall is quite refreshing and unique. She combines a lot of electronic sounds with a little rock and odd piano-pop. The music on "Love Full of Punches" probably won't bring Naomi to super-stardom, as I Imagine it to be way too alternative for that, but then again, most people probably thought that about Portishead, Massive Attack, Bjork and the likes and they made it." - Past and Present Webzine

"The vocals are the focal point of this CD and they come off very well. Naomi has an evocative and mysterious voice that brings out the edgy quality of her music. They sound a bit bit like something you would hear at a renaissance festival mixed with Bjork. Call it quirky, or maybe ahead of its time, this material is poppy but very unlikely to be popular commercially. It's a bit too fringe for top 40. Take my favorite song for instance: "Bride of the Monster" is a song about the Ed Wood schlock sci-fi/horror B-movie masterpiece. It sounds like a cross between a piano bar song and a show tune. It is totally out there, and very fitting considering the subject material. If you like hearing girls sing songs that are a little dirty and make graphic references to oral sex (which I do) you should check out the song "Drown." Some of this recording also has a heavy sequenced/electronic sound to it that puts it somewhere up in the new wave territory. At times I get a vibe slightly similar to Souxsie and the Banshees. Everything that I am hearing is new and refreshing. It is wild and unpredictable, but it is also classy and sophisticated. I think that it is safe to say that you can take away more from this CD than you could every CD on Billboard's top 100 today." - Neo-Zine

bio

Developed in Miami, Florida at the age of 14, the experimental trip-hop sounds of songwriter/pianist Naomi Hall continues today in Seattle, Washington. Untouched by the mainstream format of music, Hall moves to a distinct beat. Her resourcefulness with an out-of-tune piano and a recorder gained her some fame in the late nineties on the New Jersey radio show, Incorrect Music Hour. Gifted with a voice that echoes the chilling whispers of Suzanne Vega and an ability to assimilate the haunt of Depeche Mode into her own effervescence, the ingenuity set forth in her work is clear. After moving across the country in 2005, Hall began crafting riffs that would later expand into the infectious and layered melodies that complete her debut album, Love Full of Punches.

Recorded and mixed by Gary Reynolds in Electrokitty Studios (Carrie Underwood, Smashing Pumpkins), Love Full of Punches is addictive music, bursting with Shaggsian rhythms, colorful piano, lyrics that employ rhetorical strategy and undeniable spunk. While Hall is influenced by fellow musicians and sometimes collaborates with friends, her vision remains as originally intended. "I get inspired by people and have to go with it, but when it comes to my music, I insist on holding all the cards," she smiles. This is a good thing, as Hall's work manages to embody a discreet array of gonzo American popular culture while keeping her own trademark whim. Given this creative energy, the lullaby choruses of "Our Ocean," the driving bassline of "In That Moment" and the ethereal piano harmonies of "From the Outside" are that much more enjoyable. Hall's work is an alluring break from the familiar and unequivocal proof that music can still be fun.
